Health insurance coverage sexology 2017

Dutch Basic Healthcare Insurances do not cover anymore sexology. Payment for sexology problems by the healthcare insurance companies has been stopped as part of the Basic Healthcare, starting in 2014, on behalf of new rules demanded by the Health Minister, Mrs. E. Schippers. Her idea is that such problems have to be considered as private matters and you have to pay for it yourself.

There are only a few exceptions. The Basic Healthcare Insurance should cover sexology if the following matters are the case:

  • Sexual abuse or incest is involved
  • Sex addiction
  • Gender-identity

These issues have to be a part of a DSM-diagnosis and the involved leading consultant either is a GZ-psychologist, psychotherapist or psychiatrist. If you are not sure about covering by the insurance company, please get informed ahead by consulting your insurance company.

In most sexology cases there will be no covering from out the basic health insurance. If you might have Additional Health Insurance sexology treatment could be included. Look at your payment and cancelation conditions. The following health insurance companies offer Additional Health Insurance packages deals including sexology treatment, on the following conditions:

  • The sexologist has to be registered on the board of the NVVS
  • You always need a referral of your General Practitioner

VGZ, Univé, IZA, Nedasco/VGZ, UMC, United Consumers/VGZ, De Goudse
Salland Zorg, Salland Zorg Direct en
Zorg & Zekerheid.

Another option is that you can consult a sexologist following on the treatment by a gynecologist or an urologist, with covering from out of the Basic Health Insurance, if those consultants are offering it in their treatment plan. Just get informed by the hospital ahead if that will be the case.

At this moment, Sexology Center Amsterdam has no contract with any of the Dutch Healthcare Insurance companies.
